************************************************************************************************************* Made a dash over to Wilbarger Co from HWY. 70 to visit my childhood home of Odell right on the Red River. I had hope to meet up with Billy Gilbert a friend from long ago and to this day but found he had gone back to Denton after a week there, so I explored what little remained of the now ghoast town pretty much. Was not birding per se but, did go over to the creek NW of town and found the same birds from so long ago. Bullock's Orioles on near the Wilson place and Blue Grosbeaks north of town. The huge old Siberian Elms that were around the two old churches are now gone due to tornados and drought. They once hosted scores of orioles when I was a kid and their nests flew like flags long into the winter once the leaves fell. The town looks real bad without its big trees. My school there is now just a huge pile of sandstone blocks and empty windows. I drove down thru Vernon to Foard, Knox and Haskell Counties on Hwy 6...Everything bringing back memories. Wheat growers are busy harvesting and are easy to spot from a long way away...Red soil finally turns to sandy brown again in Haskell Co. I stopped alone the two forks of the Witchita Rivers, or what was called rivers, and piddled a bit birding...A few Miss. Kites, orioles Bell's Vireos etc. Nothing major. Hit a few small lakes for a few moments but saw nothing of note except a single Black Tern, a Snowy Egret and two distant ducks I could not make out. There was one culvert on the way down with Cave Swallows...I think in Knox Co....Despite how dry it was , There was Am. Robin song here and there this morning but nothin like over toward Young and Clay Co.s where they are all over the smaller towns in an area that has actually had better rains. Saw Swainson's Hawks in two locations. Now in Shackelford Co. where I will be piddling around (along with Haskell and Throckmorton Co.s) for the next few days. Love the area, so much more insect diversity and herps than in in Central Texas.
