Hi, all!
Internet's acting funky, so can't post pictures, but the Birder Patrol had a
very successful outing today, starting at the "Mountain Plover Fields" along
FM 1599 where we finally found some distant Mountain Plovers to the north, a
little further down the road than we got them Wednesday. The masses of
Sandhill Cranes almost upstaged the plovers, and a handful of geese flew
over as well! Continuing on, a tractor was plowing a field that was just
loaded with Caracaras and White-tailed Hawks of all ages! A very small pond
just after the road turns to dirt had a Snipe and a Vermilion Flycatcher as
special birds.
From there we headed to Osprey Overlook at Laguna Atascosa, and after
diligent searching Pat finally singled out the male Eurasian Wigeon! He
kept disappearing so not everyone got to see him, but she also pinned down a
couple of Canvasbacks and a female Bufflehead in the throng. When not
searching for the wigeon the group was entertained by the local Alligator
that seemed to be going after a Tricolored Heron. Back at the headquarters
we searched in vain for the Tropical Parula, but it HAD been seen by others
(the place was a zoo today between the happy families and happy hunters out
there :)). My list had 69 species for the day, but there were additional
things seen.
