Ed Fair and I saw the Amazon Kingfisher today at Zacate Creek. We arrived
at 8:15a and left about 11a after not seeing it. An Ohio birder was there
and he was planning to stay until he saw the bird. When we returned at
3:10p, the Ohio birder was gone. We had an understanding with him that if
he wasn't there when we returned, that meant he had seen it.
A Texas birder spotted the bird at 3:44p. The bird was perched in a tree on
the west side of the creek, a little south of the big drainage pipe that
comes out of the bank on the east side of the creek. The bird flushed a
Green Kingfisher which made for a great comparison in size. The Amazon
moved up and down the creek mainly between the area where we first saw it
and the waterfall giving us many great looks until we finally walked away
at 4:30p. What a spectacular bird!
How do you top a four kingfisher day?!?
