Our first seven Turkey Vultures arrived on the last day of February - they now total 14 as of this morning at their mid-town roost. One week ago Matt and I spotted the first two Cave Swallow scouts at Post Park, and he spotted a Cassin's Sparrow not that long ago; this morning the Cassin's was singing. Curve-billed Thrashers are in full strut and song, as are Western Meadowlarks. Phainopeplas seem to be pairing up, even if they haven't really stuck around. What few winter sparrows we had don't seem to be thinning out quite yet, so they're adding their songs to the mix - I'm used to hearing White-crowned Sparrows all winter, but Brewer's Sparrows are fantastic to listen to as well! Black-throated Sparrows have been singing in town for nearly a month now. My 2003 self would be horrified to know what my patch list is so far this year, much less my year list: the totals are reminiscent of a decent day on the coast. Quality, not quantity, I suppose! So far the unexpected find (aside from irruptive species!) is Canyon Wren from Post Park, along with the usual Cactus and Rock Wrens. Not mind-blowing, but a nice surprise.
