I went out this afternoon hoping to get to see the Hammond’s Flycatcher. There
are LOTS of fisherman. I saw a number of Yellow rump warblers, a couple of ruby
crowned kinglets, an Eastern Phoebe, a pair of Cardinals, some Carolina
chickadees, black and turkey vultures. I heard crows. Up the road there was a
crested caracara. I studied the area along the path at the bottom of the
stairs two different times. I spent time scanning the river bank - to no avail.
But along the river there were fisherman almost every 10-15 feet. Best birds
were following the higher path downstream aways. And there were birds that
showed up in the thicket below the stairs. But no out of the ordinary birds.
But . . . it was a beautiful day to be outside, the area is beautiful.
Farther on 347 but in a different field the mountain plovers put me to the test
of studying the fields to find them. They were far enough away that they were
very hard to find and keep. But I did get some poor photographs (small, small
bird in a big big picture) but good enough to be sure that they WERE the
mountain plovers. They are now in a field farther south than 10 days ago. The
field is at the intersection of CR 347 and 348. south of 348. There are also a
number of killdeer in this area.
I also went down to the canoe launch ramp. Got to watch the vultures come in
to roost. The grass beneath the trees on the opposite side was beautifully
green. Trees are leafing out.
No special little flycatcher, but it was a good day to be out birding.
