Yesterday (01/04/17), I spent about 4.5 hours birding the Santa Gertrudis
division of King Ranch primarily west of Kingsville in Kleberg Co. Given the
chilly & windy conditions in the early morning birding was rather slow at first
but picked up as it warmed. Highlights for me of that outing were the Ringed
Kingfisher, Merlin, Verdin, and Hermit Thrush. While I see Merlins rather
regularly this particular one just sat on a low telephone line next to my
vehicle giving above average looks, but of course I was without my camera which
most annoying. The Hermit Thrush was my first of the winter season. I am
very surprised at the lack of wintering sparrows this winter.
