Today seemed a good day to bird from the car, so I headed up to the hills. I first went to Canyon of the Eagles LCRA Park, which didn’t yield much in the way of birds, but did show me that the upper reach of Lake Buchanan is now just the Colorado River again. Inks Lake State Park yielded 34 Canada Geese in 2 groups. I had a flock of more than 100 Lesser Goldfinches there feeding mostly on the ground. The Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery was the most productive. The Long-tailed Duck is still present and there were Robins, a large mixed flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Pine Warblers. I did not expect Pine Warblers there, but there they were. Also Gadwall, Mallard, Lesser Scaup, and American Wigeon on the water. Had Ring-billed Gulls at both the State Park and the Hatchery. I also had at least 3 Bald Eagles and a suspected 4th that I couldn’t stop and get a good look at, as well as an Osprey, during my drive from the LCRA park to Inks Lake. All were subadult. Off to watch Super Bowl now, but will post to eBird later.
