I wandered about Hockley County for eight hours yesterday, working the
highways and byways for critters and photographs of critters. As I left,
early in the morning, I was thinking what a grand day it would be to add
Say's Phoebe and Sage Thrasher to county list for the year. Well, read on.
9 Blue-winged Teals at the Bison Road Playa, 4 Blue-winged Teals at the
Sundown Water Treatment Ponds (WTP), 2 Cinnamon Teals at the Bison Road
Playa, 6 Cinnamon Teals at the Sundown WTP, 1 Canvasback at the Bison Road
Playa, 2 Redheads at the Bison Road Playa, 3 Redheads at the Sundown WTP, 2
Scaled Quails along Alamo Road, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant near Anton, 1
Ring-necked Pheasant near Smyer, 1 Greater Yellowlegs at the Bison Road
Playa, 1 Wilson's Snipe at the Sundown WTP, 1 Say's Phoebe near Pep, 1
Say's Phoebe near Petit, 1 Say's Phoebe near Smyer, 1 Mountain Bluebird at
the Sundown Golf Course, 2 Sage Thrashers along FM 41 just west of Highway
385, 2 American Pipits at the Bison Road Playa, 3 Chestnut-collared
Longspurs at the Bison Road Playa, 2 McCown's Longspurs at the Bison Road
Playa, and 4 Pine Siskins at Levelland City Park.
I paid a quick visit to the Reese Center Playa (Lubbock County) on the way
home, picking up 2 Redheads, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 1
Say's Phoebe, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 Swamp Sparrow, and 2 Pine Siskins.
Not too shabby: not only did I add Say's Phoebe and Sage Thrasher to the
county list ... I got photographs!
