Greetings All:
I visited Monahans Sandhills State Park over the weekend. Flowers and
butterflies were pretty good for this early in the season and, though a bit
sparse, birding highlights were pleasantly varied.

On the way down and there - 4 April 2015

Lubbock County: 1 Ferruginous Hawk near Woodrow, 1 Purple Martin at Indiana
Avenue and South Loop 289.

Lynn County: 22 Sandhill Cranes just south of the Lubbock/Lynn County line
along Highway 87, 5 Bronzed Cowbirds just south of Tahoka.

Dawson County: 1 male Yellow-headed Blackbird in a huge flock of Red-winged
Blackbirds, Brewer's Blackbirds, and Great-tailed Grackles near La Mesa.

Midland County: 1 Sage Thrasher at the intersection of West Loop 250 and
Interstate 20, west side of Midland.

Ector County: 2 Inca Doves at a truck stop along Interstate 20, east side
of Odessa - included as a highlight because I do not know how well the
species is doing in this region - it is crashing in mine.

There and on the way back - 5 April 2015

Ward County: 1 Long-eared Owl in a willow thicket near the campground at
Monahans Sandhills State Park, 14 Pine Siskins at MSSP. This sighting, the
most surprising of the trip, is consistent with recent April sightings
(well into late April) of the species moving through counties just to the
north.

Dawson County: 4 Pine Siskins at La Mesa State Park.
