Greetings All:
On Thursday, 25 February 2016, Rich Kostecked and I spent the morning
chasing, unsuccessfully, the Common Crane in Terry County and the rest of
the day working on his Texas Century Club efforts in Gaines and Dawson
Counties.
Highlights from the area southeast of Brownfield: 49 Long-billed Curlews
(both), 1 Burrowing Owl (AH), 1 Merlin (both), 1 Prairie Falcon (both), 2
Chestnut-collared Longspurs (AH) - AH scored a few more in this area
because RK was burning his eyeballs out looking for The Crane.
The sole highlight from Gaines County was a SAPH near Cedar Lake (both).
Dawson County was really hopping with 3 male Cinnamon Teals south of
O'Donnell (both), 3 male Cinnamon Teals west of Lamesa (both), 2
Canvasbacks south of O'Donnell (both), 58 Canvasbacks west of Lamesa
(both), 1 Redhead south of O'Donnell (AH), 4 Redheads west of Lamesa
(both), 3 Soras south of O'Donnell (both), 3 Virginia Rails south of
O'Donnell (both), 1 Greater Yellowlegs south of O'Donnell (both), 1 Greater
Yellowlegs west of Lamesa (both), 4 Wilson's Snipes south of O'Donnell
(both), 1 Golden-fronted Woodpecker in Lamesa (both), 1 Hermit Thrush in
Lamesa (both), 7 Pine Siskins in Lamesa (both).
The only Lynn County highlight was 5 Canvasbacks at Skeen Playa (AH).
We had a great day - despite dipping on the Common Crane. Fortunately,
Rich was able to pick up the Common Crane on the 26th ... and I got eyes on
the bird this morning.
