Greetings All:
I spent a fair chunk of yesterday, wandering about Hockley County - hoping
to find a few new critters or photograph a few that I have seen but not
photographed.
Good news on both counts: I saw and photographed one new species for the
year (Marsh Wren) and I got a second bite at the apple on Blue-headed Vireo
(I missed one, thanks to not being able to pursue it onto private property
earlier in the year - but I got it this time around)
Highlights included 3 Wood Ducks at Smyer Playa, 6 Blue-winged Teals at
Roundup Play, 2 Canvasbacks south of Smyer, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant at
Roundup Playa, 1 Eared Grebe south of Smyer, 17 American Avocets south of
Smyer, 4 Long-billed Curlews at Smyer Playa, 16 Least Sandpipers at Smyer
Playa, 2 Wilson's Snipes at Roundup Playa, 1 Spotted Sandpiper at Brashears
Park (Levelland), 1 Greater Yellowlegs southwest of Pep, 2 Lesser
Yellowlegs at Brashears Park, 1 Black-crowned Night Heron at Brashears
Park, 1 Merlin southeast of Pep, 1 Peregrine Falcon south of Roundup, 1
Prairie Falcon at Smyer Playa, 1 Prairie Falcon in Anton, 1 Say's Phoebe in
Pep, 1 Blue-headed Vireo southwest of Pep, 2 Marsh Wrens at Smyer Playa, 2
Western Bluebirds in Pep, 6 Western Bluebirds southwest of Pep, 4 Mountain
Bluebirds in Pep, 1 Mountain Bluebird southeast of Pep, 1 Sage Thrasher at
Smyer Playa, 1 Orange0crowned Warbler at Roundup Playa, 3 Chipping Sparrows
west of Anton, and 1 male Yellow-headed Blackbird south of Roundup.
The Marsh Wren is, I believe, the 204th bird species I have seen in Hockley
County during 2016.
