I spent a little over seven hours in Floyd County yesterday, adding only
fours species to my county list (Eastern Screech Owl, Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Bufflehead, Red-breasted Nuthatch) for the year (the game with
Brandon Best and Rich Kostecke) and lucking into the following highlights:
6 Canvasbacks at the Lockney WTP, 8 Redheads at the Lockney WTP, 1
Ring-necked Pheasant at the Lockney WTP, 1 Greater Yellowlegs at the FM 37
x FM 378 Playa, 1 Rough-legged Hawk near Sandhill, 1 female and 1 male
Red-bellied Woodpeckers at Eagle's Hall Park (also present at the site: a
female Golden-fronted Woodpecker - the male RBWO spent time foraging with
both females), 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch near Sandhill, 2 Lapland Longspurs
near Providence, 7 McCown's Longspurs at the FM 378 x FM 2286 Playa, and 4
McCown's Longspurs near Providence.
Conditions are very dry throughout the county: roughly 50% of the playas
that held a sheet of water last week are now dry and the wind-driven
mixture of dust and cotton fibers is brutal.
