Two days of good birding in the RGV. The highlights: At Santa Ana Friday: Gray Hawk, Common Yellowthroats (2), Hooded Merganser (1), Fulvous Whistling Duck (4), and Green-winged Teal, Blue-Winged Teal, Gadwall, Mottled Duck, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, and Black-bellied Whistling Duck. On Boca.Chica road today: Chihuahuan Raven (4, a life bird), Peregrine Falcon (1), Harris' Hawks (13, including 6 perched together on Palmito Road), Northern Harrier (4), White-tailed Hawk (3), American Kestrel (4), Osprey (1). Photo highlights are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/13451078@N03/ A plea to visitors: please do not hurry toward and approach too closely a perched bird, especially raptors that are highly sensitive to intrusion. At Santa Ana last weekend two visitors rushed at a perched White-tailed Kite, with predictable results. They ignored my pleas not to get too close. A dozen birders on the morning bird walk who came by a few minutes later didn't get to see the kite. Thoughtless.
