Sad news indeed.
David and Jan have been long-time icons in Texas birding. They helped me
organize volunteers for the field work of the breeding Henslow's Sparrows
in south Houston. Very likely, that work would have been far more
difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish without their help.

So very sorry to hear this sad news. We loose yet another icon of Texas
naturalists.

I have known Jan better than I knew David. Jan was a World-class Girl
Birder teammate of mine on very early Great Texas Birding Classic's and
planned an awesome UTC route. If only her team had followed thru- we would
have won! Dear Jan, please accept my deepest sympathies and once you are
ready to talk to a fellow widower, please contact me. In the meantime, take
solace in birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and close family. So many of us
are thinking of you.

Life is better with birds!

From Mike Rickard: Sorry for the previous postings problems.
It is with sadness I report the death of David Dauphin on July 8. David
and his wife Jan have been our neighbors, friends, and above all fellow
nature enthusiasts. The cause of death was Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease, and David had been on oxygen for some time. However, he and Jan
remained active with their yard and added a number of new species,
including a US record, to the yard list, which now stands at 159.

David developed and maintained a superb website featuring extensive data
about Rio Grande Valley nature, economy, and other areas of interest to
visitors. The showpiece of the website is Jan's excellent photos of
butterfly adults and life histories. When we were house-hunting in the
RGV
in 2008 we found this information very helpful, and we ultimately bought
the house behind theirs, since we were seeking a community that was open
to butterfly-friendly yards. Over the years I'm sure we had many nice
butterflies stray from Jan and David's yard to ours, but I think we sent
a
few back their way. Good butterflying, David

It is with great sadness that I forward this from Mike ...I worked with
David for years on several TOS projects. I'd love to see the butterflies
and birds where you are now.
