We saw a ferruginous, probably the same bird on Pattison Road about 11:30
AM. Very nice bird and cooperative on views on pole and in flight.

Subject: [texbirds] Fw: Good katy prairie birds this morning

My posts from my work email again appear to be getting blocked. Attempt #2
Texbirders:
Last night called Steve Gast and helped organize an impromptu Katy Prairie
gathering that proved very productive this morning.

Highlights
Before dawn: I had short eared owl crossing in headlights low over Patterson
rd about 0.5 mi n of Morrison.

Got a King rail we all heard on kpc indian grass preserve. we had 60
harriers slowly leaving roosts and many long billed curlews and sh cranes
flying around dawn.

Bob Honig  spotted a Greater Roadrunner that we all got  on crossing Hebert
rd to the north just east of penick rd. also saw running west parallel to
Hebert on southern edge of the plowed field

Rare Juvenile dark phased ferruginous hawk seen well by all 5 of us in kpc
mary manor property on ground but also on telephone pole on Patterson about
0.5 mi n of Morrison. Also seen on line of east west telephone poles along
private road into skeet shooting place. Striped two shades of gray tail.
Diagnostic Long yellow gape extending under eye. Obvious bright white
patches on top of large dark wings in flight.
Even Dark gray when perched. Dark from  below in flight with white trailing
half of wing.very cool bird. Hopefully will hang around and remain visible
from patterson rd. Bob got poor picture.

Henslows Sparrow first spotted by mike obrien and steve, refound for harvey
laas and I. Seen much better than typical for this species on mary manor
field-not visible from public rd.

I also had Sprague's pipit we all had LeContes sparrow and mike had lapland
longspur on mary manor.

Lots of reasons above to thank Katy Prairie Conservancy's efforts to
preserve habitat in Katy prairie.
