I spoke to a few of the guys who work at San Jacinto Battlegrounds (Harris
County) today to find out when they would be returning the water to the
wetlands after the levee was put in. They said the water was not going to be
put back in. They are restoring the marshes to what they looked like when the
battle occurred. This means the duck pond in the back of the battlegrounds
will become a marsh. So take advantage of the muddy conditions that are
attracting so many shorebirds right now before the marsh plants grow in to
cover the entire area. This will mean a very different birding experience in
the winter, but it will be true to the historical conditions of the time of the
battle which is the purpose of the park.
Good birding,
