Like a lot of folk, I figured that the overnight arrival of a cold front,
turbulent skies aloft, and rain might have brought in a few migrants ... so
I headed on out to Hockley County early this morning.
There were probably migrants out there but it quickly became apparent that
winds were going to make most of the day pretty useless for birding ... so
I was only out for about an hour and a half.
Hockley County highlights: 4 Gadwalls south of Smyer, 124 Blue-winged Teals
at Roundup Playa, 32 Blue-winged Teals south of Smyer, 4 Cinnamon Teals at
Roundup Playa, 7 Northern Shovelers at Roundup Playa, 8 Northern Shovelers
south of Smyer, 2 Northern Pintails at Roundup Playa, 4 Green-winged Teals
at Roundup Playa, 10 Green-winged Teals south of Smyer, 2 Ruddy Ducks at
Roundup Playa, 2 Black-necked Stilts at Roundup Playa, 8 American Avocets
at Roundup Playa, 2 Spotted Sandpipers south of Smyer, 7 Wilson's
Phalaropes at Roundup Playa, 68 Cattle Egrets at Roundup Playa, 1 Snowy
Egret at Roundup Playa, 19 White-faced Ibises at Roundup Playa, 1 Peregrine
Falcon south of Smyer, 2 Tree Swallows at Roundup Playa, 1 Chipping Sparrow
at the Ropesville Cemetery, 5 Yellow-headed Blackbirds at Roundup Playa,
and 42 Yellow-headed Blackbirds south of Smyer
In Lubbock County, I stopped at the well-sheltered woodlot along CR 1100,
just south of Highway 84 and quickly picked up 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 1
Western Wood Pewee, 2 Willow Flycatchers, 2 Least Flycatchers, 1 House
Wren, 1 Swainson's Thrush, 1 Wilson's Warbler, 1 Field Sparrow, 1 Lincoln's
Sparrow, and 1 Indigo Bunting, leading me to suspect that Hockley County
might have been pretty good - had the winds been a bit less.
Hopefully some of the good stuff will stay until tomorrow - when I am going
to shoot for another hundred species day in Hockley County.
