Great news on Texas Ebird. Exotic birds and how they are handled will now be
standardized and the posting will be available for all of us to see and analyze
in Texas and throughout the United States. This will allow us to see how these
birds are introduced and spread. I have quoted below one of the significant
sections but I highly recommend you read the entire article on the Texas portal
for EBird.
A bigger change comes in the inclusion of exotic species that are not
considered established by the Texas Bird Records Committee (or the American
Birding Association Checklist Committee) in data entry displays and more
importantly in public outputs. Ebird has always encouraged birders to report
all birds seen and heard, regardless of whether the species is native or
introduced. Many exotic birds in Texas have already been added by reviewers who
had to cope with a flood of data in their local areas, but other exotic or
non-established species have not been added to filters or displayed in outputs.
The recent changes to eBird will standardize display of these species across
Texas and the United States. For example, see the parrots on the Cameron
County bar graphs
(http://ebird.org/ebird/GuideMe?step=saveChoices&getLocations=counties&parentState=US-TX&bMonth&bYear00&eMonth&eYear
16&reportType=location&counties=US-TX-061&continue.xC&continue.y=8) , which
used to have only Green Parakeet and Red-crowned Parrot displayed.
Thank you Ebird!
