Good morning there today with winds still from the north.... A flock of
dark ibis was on the far side of lake, 2 Wilson's Phalaropes, a number of
migrants. But by far my favorite was an E. Whip-poor-will female in the
cedar elm woods by the creek. This is a bird I have tried for (happy just
to hear) in this county or this side of I-35 numerous times and places.
The last ones I recall hearing were just after Granger Lake was filled in
the early 80's We had them at night sometimes while white bass and crappie
fishing.
I flushed her this morning a couple of times before I knew what she was,
no white in tail, gray back, smaller than a Chuck. Never had great looks
at her on the ground as I could not detect her before I flushed her into a
different areas.
Also a Texas Rat snake up in a tree near the "bee area" had a interesting
flock of birds including migrants up in arms. Will post all this stuff to
Ebird directly.
Finally I almost stumbled over a very tiny likely new born fawn in the
grass. That thing was so small it I'm thinking it could totally curl up on
this keyboard. Am thinking the resident Great Horned Owl could easily
handle that as a meal ?
Yesterday had a singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the house.
