Hello Texbirders,
Did some quick birding this early morning as a last ditch effort to tally a
couple of more species for our Edinburg Bird-a-thon list. We birded Brush Line
Rd. north of TX 186. It's a completely different scene out there than it was a
few weeks ago.
We managed to add 4 species to our list; Hooded Oriole, Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
Bullock's Oriole, and Cactus Wren.
We started the day with two pairs of Hooded Orioles in the palm trees just
outside of the parking lot to Sal del Rey NWR off of TX 186. Groove-billed Anis
were calling in the area and a few Bewick's Wrens scolded us for being there.
Up Brushline Rd. north of TX 186 and north of GI Rd. we had good looks at a
singing Painted Bunting perched on a flowering Texas Thistle, a perched Common
Nighthawk, a couple of Clay-colored Sparrows, a fly by Yellow-billed Cuckoo,
and two Wild Turkeys crossing the road.
Right at the intersection of Brushline and Chapa Rd. we spotted a 1st Spring
male Bullock's Oriole along with a Western Kingbird, an Eastern Kingbird, a few
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, and a soaring adult White-tailed Hawk.
It was a very fun and quick morning of birding! We finished our Bird-a-thon
list with 163 species in the Edinburg area in the last month!!
I forgot to add Lark Sparrow to our ebird list this morning, other than that
the full list is below.
