Hey there,
Had a claim up in Cooke County today so I went up early to see if I could find
15 new species for my county list to bump it over 100. Did that and 12 more.
Only been up here once before back during the TOS meeting this winter with fat
Tony and a few others, we had a good day then so didnt have to work too hard
today. It did get very hot though, about 95-100.
Started the day out at dawn at the very SE corner of the county looking at the
lake. Not much here except a few Neotropic Cormorants. Moved on up along 203
but took a detour along 223 and did a lot of birding on this road. Pretty
quiet, but birds responded pretty readily to my screech-owl whistle. Highlights
along here included a young Blue Grosbeak, a flock of 60 Canada Geese flying
around somebodys fields, American Redstart, Yellow and Nashville Warblers, and
an immature Chipping Sparrow. Maybe they breed in the area??
Close to the north end of 223 had a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers and a calling
White-breasted Nuthatch.
Next moved on up north to 82 along 3164 and then mainly 297. Had another
White-breasted Nuthatch and a family of Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks at the
pond at 3164 and 262.
The star of the day was a Fish Crow that flew in while I was poking around at
Hubert Moss Lake up north. Thought it looked a little small as it flew up, and
then it called the nasal FICR call as soon as it landed. It hung around the
south end of the lake calling constantly for about 20 minutes before I moved
on. I guess it must have come down from the Red River which is just to the east
from the lake. Also had an Osprey here.
Good birding.
