Lamont: I can't help much with your question but Harry Oberholser
published a BIG paper on the then Caprimulgids in the US decades ago, with
good specimen descriptions and what he considered subspecies back
then...Much has changed, indeed the whole family name Caprimulgidea has
changed. I have/had his paper at one time at the other house and may
still, but I have been downsizing my ref.s collection extensively. Perhaps
it can be found in SORA

About 10 days ago early in the morning I was able to get excellent looks
at a Common Nighthawk, Chordeiles minor, [CONI] as it landed across the
street in a large tree directly in front of me. The most notable of all
characters for this CONI was the immense amount of buffy coloration on the

Does anyone have experience with the ssp of CONI to say from a probability
standpoint this was likely C m howelli versus C m minor or other ssp?
