20+ years ago I could have provided you with photos of large ranging flocks
of Emus, they bred and were present in large numbers , usually around
fenced rural out buildings and were especially prized by some birders that
went to great pains and expense to feed and attract them....But alas they
have become near extinct in my region,. I still see the former habitats,
typical surrounded by wire fencing, the various plastic watering and
feeding containers cracked and bleaching in the sun and the usual
disarray..It is not clear what brought about their demise...Perhaps
decreasing quality of habitat, starvation, over-hunting, poaching, mowing,
but probably just a general lack of interest in conserving this resource by
people that found the birds cause them to lose their shirts or other
commodities. I miss hearing their silent crowing on clear a morn. First
go the Prairie Chickens and then the Emu. The five acre prairies will never
be the same, the zebras and Black Bucks will roam without them.. Maybe you
can substitute* guineafowl*
