Thanks for all the input. took a few days off in Columbus Ga. The motel
I stayed at had these same sets, and the maint guy there sold me one of
his remotes(master hotel unit) for $20.00. All I had to do was unlock
the front panel controls. Had a feeling it was a remote control fix.

Original problem was unit would not respond to front panel controls and
a regular remote would turn it on and change channels but no volumn
control or turning set off. Regular remotes menu button would only bring
up CC, sleep timer and exit.
