Phil,

Using the HOT specs program that came with the Intrepid database, the 2253
is rated for 6 amps max to the 2553 8 amps. Max collector cutoff current is
much lower at 10 uA compared to 1000 uA and the 2253 has a shorter fall time
and higher minimum gain so it likely operates faster and should run cooler.
Likely to run OK but less able to deal with excess current. If something
goes it will be more likely to fail, but the 2553 likely would as well if
that much current was pulled. Since B+ line is fused with 1.6A fuses, I
doubt it will cause PS failure if it were to go, so it is likely OK.

I searched my boneyard and found a 35" Toshiba chassis with a 2SD2253
HOT. Seemed similar application, similar chassis, mfgr, etc. I entered the
2sd2253 salvage HOT into Tritronics' parts database and tho it did not
show a direct cross to the original 2SD2553, it DID show a common
toshiba number# 23314955 that is common to both HOTs.
And is available at $5.89.
I tried it. Fix was to replace the GMA 1.6A B+ fuse, the HOT and set is
functioning well, HOT cool.
Seems these Toshiba 2sd2253s do sub for the orig 2SD2553.
