You will either need to adjust the potentiometer on the bottom of the laser
to correct the voltage (yes you can damage it by doing this) or replace the
optical pickup assembly. If replace you can look for at least your expense
$50-$80/ea.
Most common problem is that they will play PS1 (Black back CD), audio CD,
PS2 (Blue Back CD) but WILL NOT play DVD Movie or PS2 DVD Game (Gold or
silver back). If you take the laser out, the DVD adjustment is the one
furthest away from the white plastic or metal guide for the advancement. It
is one of those things you have to play with to get the right adjustment and
you may need to adjust the height (white wheel toward back) to get it.
Main thing is after any adjustment you need to check all 5 types of games to
make sure the PS2 is in proper alignment. PS1, Audio, PS2, DVD, and DVD
PS2 Game.
I have found that (although expensive) Mortal Kombat - Deadly Alliance is a
real hard game for the PS2 to read. Usually if it can read that it can read
any DVD or DVD game you throw at it. If it skips or is choppy you need to
still adjust.
