Although it may not be bad, it is one of the sets that required all three CRT's to be replaced for the intermittent hue and flicker issue as cited below: Last Update 11/13/2003 Event ID E18048974 Model KP46WT500, KP51HW40, KP51WS500, KP51WS500, KP51WS500, KP57HW40, KP57WS500, KP57WS500, KP65WS500 Subject Picture has flicker in background, also changes in hue can occur SYMPTOMS Customer complaint: 1. Picture has flicker in background, could be intermittent. 2. Picture has large shift of hue due to low output of one of the CRT'S (Can not be corrected by adjusting hue control in menu) RESOLUTION Affected units: Serial Numbers Affected: Sets with the following serial number ranges may exhibit the flicker symptom: KP-51HW40 and KP-57HW40 models: Serial numbers, which have a Zero in second digit, i.e. 90xxxxx. (not applicable with other models). WS500 models: KP-51WS500 ( 9000001-9038137) (9065001-9086666), (800001 - 8016058), Note: No sets produced between (9038138 -9065000) KP-57WS500 (9000001 - 9030340), (9200001-9215655) KP-65WS500 (9000001 - 9016392) WT500 model: KP-46WT500 (9000001- 9026103) Please be aware that less then 1% of these units will exhibit the Flicker symptom. Please take time to verify the symptom before performing this bulletin. If the customer complains of any of the symptoms above pleases do the following: Changes two chip resistors on the A-Board: Step 1 Models: KP-46WT500, KP-51HW40, KP-57HW40, KP-51WS500, KP-57WS500 & KP-65WS500 See chart, Unit/Model Detail, below to determine if resistor changes are required. R508 To 2.2k chip resistor P/N 1-216-825-91 R507 To 2.2k chip resistor P/N 1-216-825-91 See attachments below for resistor location (mod.pdf) & mod2.pdf). NOTE: An easy way to tell if the resistor value were changed to the new value is. Read the resistance value at the junction of the two resistors to ground. It should read 1.6K if the resistors were changed to the new values. Step 2: RA-6 Chassis: Models: KP-46WT500, KP-51HW40, KP-57HW40, KP-51WS500, KP-57WS500 & KP-65WS500 See chart to determine if resistor changes are required. Change one resistor on the D Board: R8061 to 1.8 ohm metal oxide P/N 1-216-392-11 See attachments below for resistor location (mod3.PDF) Must change all three CRT's. NOTES: 1. White balance and G-2 should be re-adjusted. See attached procedure below (Admanua.PDF)) 2. See attached E16315864 which contains the SM Supplement-1 3. See the revised CRT adjustment guide attached below (Admanua.PDF) 4. See the revised CRT adjustment procedure attached. (CRTproce.PDF) Models: KP-46WT500, KP-51HW40, KP-51WS500, KP-57HW40, KP-57WS500, and KP-65WS500. NOTES 1. Serial number range indicates in the Unit/Model Detail Chart indicates if resistor changes are required. 2. Boards should not be changed for this issue but must be modified by the technician. If a board does need to be replaced for another reason, see the following: All affected D Boards have been modified by PTG including all WRPC stock. A Boards were not modified and should be evaluated for the mod when received by the servicer. Currently all boards returned to SAYS are checked for both these modifications and are installed if not already done. 3. Be aware the KP-51HW40 and KP57HW40 have different CRT'S used depending on the serial numbers. If customer has this symptom refer to the CRT P/N chart below or SM Supplement-1 attached, E16315864.pdf, for the correct CRT part number and other part changes. If the wrong CRT is used you will get good center focus but poor side focus. 4. Model KP-51WS500 with serial numbers between: S/N 8000001-8004298 Do not require the resistor value change for Ref R507 and R508 on the A Board. S/N after 8004298 does not require the resistor value change for Ref R8061 on the D Board. 5. Model KP-46WT500 doesn't require the resistor value change for Ref R507 and R508 on the A Board or R801 on the D Board. High Voltage Block Anode lead removal You might have difficulties removing the Anode Lead from the HVB. If this occurs please use the following removal method. Using Freeze spray (Point Coolant spray such as 9-919-587-61) Spray into the High Voltage Block for at least 5 sec. You must securely grasp the lead then firmly push down and turn the lead then pull out the lead from the block. If not successful, repeat the procedure applying more downward force on the cable before twisting and pulling back up. After removing HV cable please clean frost or dews around cable connection. Warning: Caution should be taken when removing the HV lead. Be careful when pulling on the lead not to pull so hard as to cause injury to yourself do to the metal frame holding the CRT's. Explanation on how to use this document: This bulletin covers 6 models of projection televisions. All models will require the replacement of all CRT's, however some models require a resistor value change. (Please refer to the Unit-Model Detail Chart to determine if resistor changes are required. Some require the resistors changes that must be done, or the new CRT'S may exhibit the same symptom). To minimize confusion, this bulletin is divided into sections based on similar group models requiring the same steps. Also be aware that the CRT part numbers in the Service Manual may not be correct. Use the CRT part number chart at the end of this document. We recommend printing out the file attachments, some will assist you in finding the resistors and one is an improved CRT adjustment procedure. Never replace all three CRT'S at one time, first replace the green and set it up as a reference to the other CRT'S in the set, and then replace the Red and Blue CRT'S. For this issue only, the CRT warranty for labor will be extended for an additional year (2 years total) from the date of purchase.
