A defective pickup can read cd but no dvd playback; in most players the dectection for disc type is made testing the pit size (holes that former the track) so the disc must be spinning after primary focus detection to judge disc type. You may note that cd pits are larger than dvd pits and focus & tracking servo need less accuracy to read cd tracks; this concepts are over 1 laser pickup (Samsung dvd use this type of pickup),things with 2 laser are different (1 laser for cd, another laser for dvd both with accurate wavelentgh to optimun disc type reading).
