Maybe a solder crack. What you described is what that unit does when it reaches the end of a tape. Yours is not rewinding be for it shuts off, but that may not have any bearing on the problem. (My own unit). Periodically this unit will go crazy. You insert a tape...Push Play..will play a couple of seconds, then display says.."Bye" and shuts off. When you re-apply power tape ejects. Seems to be OK on FF and Rew. I have disassembled the mode switch, cleaned and lubed it. Worked OK for a couple of sessions, then goes back to the same problem.
