[TechAssist] RCA 5 disc DVD model RC5920P (2002) BlockBuster DVDs freeze up, his doesn't

He said when he rents DVD movies from Block Buster, about 75% of them, 
the picture freezes. He has 3 or 4 DVDs of his own that play perfectly. 
His DVDs are not late releases. I suggested the reason (The rentals seem 
clean) is the rentals are probably all late releases and have encription 
copygard technology, and his does not.This may be the cause. I theorised 
his RCA deck may need a software upgrade. Anyone familiar with this 
specific model doing this?
I'm at a loss here.
