Peter OLiver Tucson Radio TV From: "Glenn Larkman" <mail@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Reply-To: techassist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To: <techassist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [TechAssist] Picture Quality Issue - ALL NTSC PTV's Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 14:29:24 -0700 Thought I would pick the brain trust on this one and see if any of you had a better explanation for this than I could come up with. On most of the large PTV's I repair, after cleaning the optics and returning the set to normal operating condition I have often had my customers take issue with the flickering effect noticeable on fine graphics, such as a sattelite reciever menu or the emblems on some stations, or the sports scores on a footy game. The flickering is most noticeable on a white line, for example, running horizontally where the line appears to be between two scanning lines. I'm sure you all know what I'm referring to. It can also be seen to a lesser degree on say a 27" direct view set. I can usually explain this away to most customers for what it is, a result of the number of scanning lines being only 525 as well as it being interlaced scanning,( at least thats what I put it down to....maybe I'm wrong) as it is not noticeable when watching a normal picture without fine graphics or text, but my lawyer wannabe customer on this particular set is threatening legal action and has, of course, contacted his credit card company to fight the charge as a result of the completely "inadequate picture quality" For reference, this is a 7 year old 45" mitsubishi. BTW, the picture looks a million bucks considering the age of the set. My question is this.. are any of you aware of a website, for example, where this issue is listed and explained, perhaps better than I can explain, in a laymans format that anyone could understand? I thought some of the sites where people are encouraged to enter their service menus and really screw their sets up might have a reference to this in terms of extolling the virtues of HDTV as opposed to NTSC but have had no luck. I simply want to have a little more ammunition for the credit card company when they call than me other than me simply saying its the way it is on the setup he's got and thats it. I would also be interested to hear of any suggestions, tips, stories or amusing anecdotes with regard to how the rest of you handle these type of customers. You know the kind.......zero to dxxkhead in less than a minute. Thanks for any advice.
