Techs, I believe ECG, NTE, and the others have been doing this for years. In my opinion, not really that bad. Find a transistor that will sub for a number of transistors, buy it, label it with a replacement number, and charge double or triple the price of the generic. Many of us have done this in reverse, at least for testing purposes. Cross a transistor you don't have in stock to NTE, pull out the Danbani catalog, and reverse cross to a generic you may have in stock. Over time, you can build your inventory with 95% of the transistors you ever need.
