Hi Dave,
No FF/RW or sluggish FF/RW replace idler assembly.  In fact, just order the
tune-up kit, which also includes belts and a pinch roller.  You might also
check your brake band on the supply reel and clean the sensor underneath the
take-up reel.  Oil, dust and deposits in the sensor can intermittently
contribute to the symptoms you're describing...
