Several folks suggested the center LED, so I ordered and got one. When
we went to replace the old one, we found it had come unsoldered.
Soldering the original one back in fixed the problem.

Your problem could be one of the end sensors in the vcr. I had a
Magnavox
with identical problem, and it ended up being one of the end sensors
causing
the problem.
