There was also talk of additional signing not being required in the event
of an "all out"
- provided the signal heads benefitted from a white border, this would be a
sign in itself.

signals fail, as they are still a visible indication of the installation!

Not a 'legal' but in a city centre environment, surely the backing
boards come into their own separating the signals from the background
clutter.
The pressure on you is to make them less conspicuous which goes against
safety with the many flashing lights conflicting displays etc.=20

a set of signals without white backing board strips. Para 46 of the
Traffic Signs General Directions indicates that a white border may be
provided on traffic signals but is not mandatory. Is anyone aware of any
