The key is to rent a car, or in your case, a motorcycle. You can go anywhere
and without it will be harder to get away from the touristy sites.

!0 days. Less you won’t see enough, more is tiring and expensive. My biggest
tip about seeing France, or anywhere is to get out of the big cities and go to
a grocery store. Just look at the stuff they eat and ask people what is this? I
was in a big store and I was looking at the wine and it was really expensive,
like the prices here. As I am standing there and telling my friend, ”they can’t
drink this every day”. So, this really old bent over lady with a cane comes
over to us and pointed to the floor, under and behind the big shelves were
dozens of two gallon bottles of red and white, some with no labels at all. They
were about 2 American dollars each.

I wanted to buy ice, ya know, a bag of ice for the cheap cooler I had bought so
I could chill the hard cider I had bought from a roadside booth. The French do
not understand ice at all. They think that cold drinks are bad for the colon
(SWEAR TO GOD). I learned that if you wanted more than a couple of cubes you
have to go to a bar. They have ice.

The trains are cool and thrifty, but when you get to the town, you still need a
ride to get away from the station. You can rent a bicycle if you are very hardy.

You can spend a week in Paris. Two days in the freaking Louvre. One at
Versailles. The Musee Orsay(sp). Notre Dame (don’t buy post cards from the guy
at the little gate out front. He tells you that they are part of the admission
price, but it’s not, it’s a scam, and he gets everyone).

There are no French virgins. Those cherries are long gone, but they still
have the boxes they came in.
But seriously folks, Duncan wants to know about the non-touristy, non-over
priced, non crowded rustic and charming spots. Am I right?

I am surprised that this discussion isn’t about how the French are rude and
stink. I am impressed. Back when I was young and single I did a “trip of a
lifetime and flew in to Frankfurt, Germany, picked up a car and went to
Hiedelburg and then a slow route to Paris, North thru Belgium, to Amsterdam,
Copenhagen, Hamburg and back to Franfurt in 8 days.

Nowadays it would give me a heart attack.

Another time I flew into Frankfurt (the cheapest destination ticket, even now.
If you want to go to Europe, fly to Frankfurt) and to Strasburg, Paris, the
Loire Valley to Nice, then to Italy and Genoa, then to Switzerland, Vienna and
back to Frankfurt. I think that was 10 days.
