There is no seal passed the slinger. The "sand" seal seals the oil from coming outside the engine case. The sand seal originally was used to keep the sand from transfering from the outside to the inside of the case. With just the slinger ring the case is "open" to the atmosphere. oleblue ----- Original Message ----- From: Denis Dodson To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 11:23 AM Subject: [tcb] Re: Need geniuses about oil leak. No. Not dumb. I built this engine and I can’t remember what is past the slinger ring. I know that the slinger ring is meant to keep most of the oil from the crankshaft opening. It don't care what it seals. It is supposed to stop anything that tries to pass such as oil.It could be blowing oil passed the seal because the rings are bad or you could have scored piston .I might make an offer on a junk engine. Then you can go buy a 2020 or some such thing. oleblue ----- Original Message ----- From: Denis Dodson To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 10:52 AM Subject: [tcb] Re: Need geniuses about oil leak. I know that, but the sand seal is not an oil seal, right? I put in the sand seal years ago trying to stop an oil leak (it was somewhere else). You should be able to replace the sand seal with out splitting the case. oleblue ----- Original Message ----- From: Denis Dodson To: tcb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 10:44 AM Subject: [tcb] Need geniuses about oil leak. On the way to Chuck’s house after the Classic I checked my oil at the gas station and the engine compartment had oil EVERYWHERE. After freaking out for a while and getting him home, I have decided that it probably isn’t a severe leak, it just looked like it after more than a few hours of driving. Anyway, from the splatter pattern on the top of the compartment, I think the oil is coming from behind the crank pulley. I am trying to remember if there is a seal where the crank comes out of the case. I know that there is a slinger ring inside the case, but is there a seal and can I repair it without ( oh crap!) splitting the case? I also have a sand seal in there.
