I will be the first to admit that Lyle knows a lot more about VW engines than 
me; but I don't understand how a poorly rebuilt tranny could cause a crack in 
the engine case.

That was my engine.
We were replacing the oil cooler seals.
I had a very bad oil leak that seem to come from the base of the oil cooler.
It turned out to be a fine crack in the case.
According to Lyle Cherry the crack was caused due to stress on the case caused 
by a very poor job rebuilding the transaxle.
