My mixtapes (which are all MP3 at this time) are the collage kind,
where I will have the audio from a scene from a movie, and have songs
that were popular at the time respond to the sentences. The cut-up
technique. Montages that follow a theme, plunderphonics-type tributes
to artists, interview parodies (similar to the movie splices, where
someone asks questions and they are answered by song clips); so I
guess that's a sound collage more than a mixtape, but we started
calling them mixtapes because of the rap and hip-hop DJ culture. If

Nowadays, I do the same sort of thing with cds, burning everything from
music I find on the internet, bits from talking books, YouTube clips, etc. I
do the same thing with dvds sometimes, too, making folders of podcasts,
longger YouTube clips, pictures, and written material.

Have any of you on this list ever made mixtapes using cassette
equipment? As much of a cassette-lover as I am, the first so-called
"mixtapes" I made weren't literally tapes, I was doing it digitally
since I began. But I am interested in the cassette mixtape culture as
well. Collage counts; so if you've ever taken clips from existing
sources and edited them together using a tape machine, I would like to
know. I have done this digitally, but this is a tape mailing list. Now
you're probably wondering why I even created the list; well, I have a
tape collection, and I can play them and I like their sound, I just
happen to not have a machine that records them at this time.
