No!  Unless you have the edit function as an option when in the word doc you
won't be able to hear it read out to you.
 
That is how I understand it. 
 
Also evidenced by it not working when I didn't have an edit option on the
light version and then having the edit function when I got the full version.
I thought you had purchased it anyway?

No Steve it is possible I know for definite to be able to listen to a word
document though not possible to Edit it without having to purchase.
