Also an advantage to using GSM rather than 3g is that your battery will
probably last a little bit longer as well.

It is not essential, unless you are downloading a lot of data or downloading
at faster speeds.  I use it all the time, but it sounds like you probably
don't.

following this thread, I have one further question.  How essential is 3g on
a 6680, as changing the network from duel mode to GSM has solved my Cell
info display problem, but I am willing to change it back to Duel mode if 3G
is essential tom some functions on my Nokia 6680.
