As I mentioned in a previous post, I appear to have done it but am not quite sure now which setting actually worked. I have a feeling it may have been the icons on the main standby screen.

Have a try with the following:

Go to Tools, Settings, General, Sensor Settings.  I have
mine set to off, and I wonder if this has something to do
with your screen suddenly going to landscape mode?

The only place I could find that setting was in camera,
but I'd already turned it off.  Anyway, I've done a bit
more playing and may have cracked it ... though as yet am
not sure.

Turn display rotation off in settings, display. That
should sort it out.
