Dear Chip,

"Adventitiously blind" is someone who has lost their vision later in life.

Hi Darla,

What does " adventitiously blind" mean?

I think you're quite correct about how helpful it is in understanding a
complex physical arrangement, if you've ever seen it.

I will say though, to balance ability, is my perception that someone
blind since birth is usually more self-confident, especially about
independent travel, than someone who say was an adult when they lost
their vision, and it wasn't that long ago for them (say 10 years or
less).

Dear Lynn,

Unless they lose it, I do believe one who is adventitiously blind, has
some
advantages in that they have actually "seen" some of the complex
intersection designs; various kinds of lanes, etc.

For those of us who were born blind, especially totally blind, these
sorts
of things can be more difficult to visualize, and certain conditions
seem to
make this more challenging for some.

Having confidence in your abilities is 50%
Good O & M training is the rest.

Hi, not lost my freedom to walk just want to be live a long time to
walk.
If
this means modifying how I walk to me this is ok. I would rather be
walking
at 90 years old then dead or mangle up at 50 something.

Hi Joe,
Your message makes me sad. I was afraid right after I got struck by
a car
that I'd feel this way but ...
I, for one REFUSE to stop walking outside. I REFUSE to always be
accompanied
by another person be they sighted or blind. I REFUSE to be
controlled by
automobiles, inconsiderate and uneducated drivers, or my fear. While
I
totally understand and respect your point of view, I do not share it
at
all.

I hope there are others out there who feel as I do. Without us
persistent,
possibly crazy blind pedestrians, some of whom don't have any other
choice,
driving etiquette might possibly disappear all together. Be aware
and
take
care but don't forego your freedom to walk.
Sila

Yes, I don't know what the blind community around the Tallahassee
area
is
going to do. I have quick walking outside in the city of
Tallahassee all
together with out at least one visual person with me. It is just
dangers.
I
do most of my walking in the malls and stores now. It is much safer
and
cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter and whole lot less
pollen
in
the spring and fall. It is Just all around the best for me . Just
my
thoughts. Also I don't live in Tallahassee but if I did I would
just
take
a
taxies or bum from a friend or relative. Not going to do the bus
transit
in
Tallahassee. Just my thoughts.

Hi all,

I'm sorry to report to you, coming from today's Democrat, that a
woman
was
struck while walking on E. Madison yesterday afternoon by a driver
who
kept
going and left the seen of the accident. The woman was in critical
condition at the time the article was written.

"Let's be careful out there!"
