Here are some notes I made quite some time ago when it was slow at the weekend
job.
Economics: Industry and Agriculture.
Thenorth delta branch is wide enough and deep enough that small boats would
dowell for fishing and moving supplies up and down the river. Think canoes or
Johnny boats for fishing, anda Lewis and Clark flatboat for supplies.
Similarly, fishing cockles for the cove would be a good idea, as notedabove.
We have a pair of boatwrights
Making somethingeven more useful out of the marshlands/swamp is an even bigger
engineeringproject. Dykes can create polder. Dyke off sections, pump out the
water. Paddies and bogs will increase agriculturaloutput, such as rice and
cranberries. Raised wooden walkways (boardwalks) allow for access to the
variousplots. Small pumps can use river powerto pump water out of the plots,
or into other ones. Farm fishing is possible as well, husbandingfood fish in
ponds made by dyking off sections of swamp.
Common swamp/marshplants include bulrushes, cattails, water lily, and pondweed.
Pondweed can be used as a liver aid. Bulrushes are useful for reeds (which
can bewoven), flammable pollen, thatching, sugar and syrup and edible roots.
Cattails make excellent tinder and insulation, their leaves can be used in
basket weaving, and some bits are edible. Water lilies make fragrances, and
can be usedmedicinally as an anti-diarrheal and to aid stomach ailments. Marsh
mallow roots are useful astoothbrushes. Samphire is like babyasparagus. Other
crops that grow well inwet soil are black chokeberry, asparagus, high bush
cranberry, low bushcranberry (in bogs), fox grape, mint, persimmons, red
raspberry, rhubarb, strawberry, wild rice, wild celery, duck wheat, watercress.
Hickory trees like wet soil, while riverbirch and red maple like swamp, in
addition to pussy willow, cypress, and whiteoak, among others.
Mule deer andkangapigs are in the area. The rivers, swamps and sea should also
provide a variety of fresh and salt-water fish, andthe birds and animals that
prey on them.
With two rivers for waterpower, mills should be readily made, and useful. As
noted elsewhere, possible readilystarted “industry” include basket weaving,
glass blowing, possibly pottery andceramics if we find clay.
There is alsonon-swamp, marshlands in smaller plots that can be farmed.
We can make saltfrom seawater. We could salt fish, kangapig, etc. It would be
interesting tosee the flavor differences between making salt from seawater, and
making saltfrom saltmarsh brackish water.
We should considertrade delegations to the Coatipids, Sanctum Island, the
Brilliant Atoll, and,of course, Aarell and Stoddard. Ofcourse, that depends on
what we have to trade.

We need to find a way for this dock to attract traffic. It is yet another
reason Sean wants to go hunt Ezanus. There are inland tribes and communities
who could trade through us, and our fully armed and operational port...
Because, without something here to 'sell', we are really a one way stop for
ships. And merchants prefer to be able to sell high and buy low both at the
same time.
So, we need trade commodities. Things that are needed, but in short supply.
Foodstuffs. Kangapig leather. Medicinal herbs from our plentiful wetlands,
marshes and swamps. Pottery, glass, metalworks. Eventually lumber. Maybe
rope making. Fish.
Just thinking out loud.
Too bad there is no real market for dead pirates and ogres.

Technically, I believe Fred latched onto Ernst on Holly's behalf. I am not
sure Holly was engaged in the decision-making process there. A fledgling
dockmaster needs a staff!

Holly hired Ernst? I would have figured Hagar would. Either way.... a good
clerk is always helpful.
Sean keeps a sharp eye out to the landward side, from westerly through to the
north.

For those of you who owe monthly upkeeps:Elmore needs to pony up 503gp for
wages and 800gp for expenses (Bonaluria and her court of ladies) It was a lean
month for the ladies.
Hagar needs to check off 2338 gold for his company of gnomes and Rarmuck.
If Theo is to be engaged, he will cost his new master 3 gold per month. Holly
will need to cough up 403 gold to pay for Fred and Ernst.
