Never underestimate the power of hatred to rationalize a cherry picked economic
theory. Men are less subtle than you think. And individuals are far less
subtle than they think. Southern leadership believed Northerners wanted to
take away their "right" to cheap labor. And rather than wait to see if it were
true, they acted. That action sealed their fate. It isn't a matter of right
or wrong, it is a matter of numbers.

I think the concept of total war is too far. When civilians are legitimate
targets considered to be on the same scale of military personnel the cost is
too high for both sides, and we call that a war crime today. Clausewitz was

At the risk of starting a flame war, I have no actual problem with dealing out
destruction on a massive basis. The South seceded before Lincoln was even
inaugurated, and war should always be remembered as a terrible last resort. It

Civil War. One more or less got dragooned into the Civil War. Right and justice
are a point of view when the Yanks have generals burning peoples homes and
crops. Then it’s a matter of defending the home front. There’s a Southern song

than nothing after the Yanks burned the food crops. Family went to Vicksburg on
