Social science research on global change has proven itself to be integral to policy, science, and civil debates worldwide. As evidenced by the developments presented in this issue, IHDP, it's partners, and projects has positioned themselves at the center of this critical debate. Numerous colleagues have been recognized internationally for their achievements including Coleen Vogel, Anne Laugauderie, Diana Liverman, and Josef Pacyna. Multiple IHDP scientists have been invited to contribute their social science knowledge to the IPCC 5th Assessment Report. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was recently launched after being spearheaded by IHDP's Executive Director Anantha Kumar Duraiappah. This momentum will be further projected into the fall as IHDP projects and partners play host to the world's scientific community in numerous conferences and workshops. We welcome you to read more about these developments below, and to keep the momentum going into the future with your participation and contributions. We hope you enjoy this, the third issue of 2010, of the IHDP E-Zine. Navigating the Anthropocene: The Earth System Governance Project Strategy Paper* **In 2001, the Earth System Science Partnership declared an urgent need to develop `strategies for Earth System management'. Yet what such strategies might be, how they could be developed and how effective, efficient and equitable such strategies would be, remain unspecified. We argue that the institutions, organizations and mechanisms by which humans currently govern their relationship with the natural environment and global biogeophysical systems are both insufficient and poorly understood. This article summarizes the science programme of IHDP’s Earth System Governance Project. The appraisal of networked governance in the climate change arena is based on three sets of criteria. First, their potential contribution to effective climate change mitigation and adaptation; second, their contribution to broader political goals such as increased participation and inclusiveness in global environmental governance; and third, their linkages and fit with the existing institutional architecture of international climate change governance. The article concludes with a set of questions for future research. The transition to a more sustainable world will inevitably require radical changes in the actions of all governments, and it will call for significant changes to the lifestyles of individuals everywhere. Bringing together some of the world’s most highly regarded experts on governance and sustainable development, this book examines these necessary processes and consequences across a range of sectors, regions and other important areas of concern. It reveals that the governance of sustainable development is politically contested, and that it will continue to test existing governance systems to their limits. As both a state-of-the-art review of current thinking and an assessment of existing policy practices, it will be of great interest to all those who are preparing themselves - or their organisations - for the sustainability transition. http://www.earthsystemgovernance.org/publications<http://006.frnl.de/lt/t_go.php?i=5881&e=MjIxOTk2MQ==&l=-http--www.earthsystemgovernance.org/publications> United Nations University *Book – Engaging Civil Society: Emerging Trends in Democratic Governance* This book attempts to examine the changing roles of civil society in global and national governance. It identifies factors that influence the effectiveness of civil society in promoting democratic governance. It asks: To what extent and how has the global civil society been influencing global governance and democratic change? What have been the patterns of growth of civil society in Asia and Africa including the legal frameworks under which CSOs are established? What are the capacity gaps of the civil society vis-à-vis its assumed roles? What are the mechanisms for the horizontal and vertical accountability of civil society? How and with what effect has civil society been engaged in promoting democratic change and inclusive governance? Through analyses of trends within North-East Asia, South-East Asia, South Asia and the Pacific Islands and specific innovations and reforms at the country level, the contributors have provided various perspectives on the causes of the decline in trust, countries and institutions that have managed to maintain higher degrees of confidence, and governance innovations and practices that have played an important role in strengthening trust once it has faltered. It examines the success stories and the failures of international environmental law and argues that future responses to global environmental crisis will be more about good environmental governance rather than just more treaties and laws. Environmental governance in future will need to accommodate the needs and aspirations of peoples from developed and developing countries alike and will have to be based on decisions and actions by a vast range of actors and stakeholders and not just the nation state that has traditionally dominated environmental diplomacy to date. http://www.unu.edu/unupress/2010/futureOfIntlEnvironmentalLaw.html<http://006.frnl.de/lt/t_go.php?i=5881&e=MjIxOTk2MQ==&l=-http--www.unu.edu/unupress/2010/futureOfIntlEnvironmentalLaw.html> United Nations University *Book – Traditional Knowledge in Policy and Practice: Approaches to Development and Human Well-being* This book focuses on the relevance of TK to key environment- and development-related sectors, discusses the current debates within each of these sectors and presents suggestions as to how TK can be effectively integrated with conventional science and policy.
