With college commencement season underway, Bernie was flanked at a news
conference on Monday by students and graduates who are deep in debt. At a time
when the amount of outstanding college loans has surpassed credit card debt,
Bernie is fighting to lower interest rates on student loans like the $370,000
owed by a family doctor at a community health center in Burlington, Vt. He is
proposing legislation to let high school juniors and seniors take college
courses to cut costs. And, as a member of the Senate education committee, he is
working on broad legislation to make U.S. tuition competitive with other
countries.

INCOME INEQUALITY WORRIES FED CHIEF
There is a “worrisome” trend toward growing income and wealth inequality in
America, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen told Bernie at her first
congressional hearing. Bernie asked her a very simple question. “Are we still a
capitalist democracy or have we gone over into an oligarchic form of society in
which incredible economic and political power now rests with the billionaire
class?”

GLOBAL WARMING GETTING WORSE
A National Climate Assessment report found global warming is accelerating. Our
refusal to deal with the crisis, Bernie said, “could have catastrophic
consequences.” A member of the Senate energy and environment committees,
Sanders has proposed a bill to put a fee on greenhouse gas emissions. His bill
is cosponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer, the Senate environment committee chairman.
