Water Footprint Calculator Methodology and Tips
Today's site from the folks at National Geographic offers a helpful tool in
determining an individual's water usage. Gentle Subscribers who are still
coming to grips with the implications of their carbon footprint may be dismayed
to discover that the water situation may be even more critical and demanding of
their attention.
"... Water footprint calculator is designed to give U.S. residents an estimate
of the water they use on a daily basis. This includes direct use at home
through toilets, taps, and hoses, but also the water embedded in the production
of food crops, electronics, paper products, electricity, transportation fuels,
and more." - from the website
Adopting a positive stance on the impact that individual efforts can achieve,
National Geographic has provided a useful tool for determining a ballpark
answer for how much water a typical American generally uses. The calculator
carefully walks the user through a series of questions to arrive at an
approximate figure, including both specific consumption activities as well as
those of an indirect nature. Of particular interest to many may be the tips and
suggestions, modest in themselves, that can produce dramatic results when
undertaken by a significant number of individuals. Under the Get Engaged
heading can be found a number of interactive presentations covering hidden
water usage, calculators, and quizzes. In addition, the publication also
advocates a proactive position with respect to the Save the Colorado River
campaign with articles, an infographic, and assessments of the river's
condition.
