Art UK
Today's site from Britain offers a collaborative effort from several
institutions and universities to present artworks from publicly owned
collections online. Gentle Subscribers will discover an outstanding resource
with an impressive number of digitized items capped off by a particularly
welcoming design.
"The website is a joint initiative between Art UK and art collections from
across the UK. ... Art UK's mission is to open up public collections for
enjoyment, learning and research. We support public collections to show their
artworks online." - from the website
Even with more than 200,000 paintings from over 3000 venues, and with close to
40,000 artists, the presentation maintains its primary focus on serving the
public. Virtually all the public artwork collections throughout the UK are
available within the exhibit, including national and local museums, charitable
trusts such as English Heritage and the National Trust, along with paintings
held in hundreds of civic buildings. In addition to the expected British
artists, the exhibit includes a number of luminaries from abroad such as Monet,
Van Gogh, and Raphael. A collection of this size demands first-rate searching
functionality which the exhibit provides; Region, Style, Topic, and Type
coupled with even more filtering options can be easily accessed. An engaging
highlight of the exhibit is the Artwork Shuffle which randomly selects six
paintings whose physical locations are pinpointed on an accompanying map, with
links to these venues which offer further sites to explore. Other features
include stories of Rogues, Rakes and Libertines: Art UK's Top Bad Boys -- and
Girls, and Lights, Camera, Paintings: Art in the Movies.
