Stories of Impact
Today's site, from New York's Simons Foundation's Science Sandbox, offers a
range of projects showcasing the effects of science projects from beyond the
scientific community. Gentle Subscribers will find stirring accounts of the
significance of science even when created by non-scientists.
"Science Sandbox is an initiative dedicated to inspiring a deeper interest in
science, especially among those who don't think of themselves as science
enthusiasts. ... Stories of Impact highlights the real-world influences of
Science Sandbox projects through personal narratives, videos and interviews.
...We support and collaborate with programs that unlock scientific thinking.
Our projects and partnerships reinforce a powerful notion: You don't have to be
a scientist to think like a scientist." - from the website
Although there are fewer than a dozen videos in this presentation, the
collection includes a number of noteworthy topics -- among them Revealing the
Invisible Wildlife of New York City; Fireworks, Apple Pie and Robots; and The
World's Smallest Science Museum. The videos may be relatively brief but are
huge in concepts, and consequences as well as being enormously uplifting. From
a high school science club in Flagstaff, Arizona's Lunar Rover Project and its
plaintive subtext, to the micro museum project and its thoroughly upbeat
World's Smallest Mollusk Museum, these videos provide inspiration to all.
